Does God Tempt or Not?
God Does Not Tempt....
James 1:13
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
God Does Tempt....
Genesis 22:1
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
And why would Jesus ask this, if God tempts no one?
Matthew 6:13
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
First, this is a translation problem. When I read the New American Standard Bible, which is supposed to be one of the more accurately translated, read the following verse...
Genesis 22:1
Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Notice that the NASB version does not use the word "tempt" but uses "test" instead.
Second, it is also a problem of not being read in context. When you read the verses in context with what is happening, it becomes very apparent that in Genesis, God did not tempt Abraham with anything but was testing to see if he would do as he was told. However, in James, it never says God wont test you. It states God will not tempt you.
